  4. Visual Art • American Impressionism- a style of painting characterized by loose brushwork and vivid colors practiced in the early 20th century.

Visual Art • Cubism- is an early-20th-century avant-garde art movement. • Cubism has been considered the most influential art movement of the 20th century. • Objects are analyzed, broken up and reassembled in an abstracted form—instead of depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from a multitude of viewpoints to represent the subject in a greater context

  9. Photography • Jacob Riis- photographer who tried to expose the inequity in society and the plight of immigrants living in urban tenements. • Examine the following photos closely • What do you see? • Does it remind you of anything you have seen? • Do these images still reflect America?

  10. Architecture • Gothic Revival-an architectural movement that began in England. when architects sought to revive medieval forms (think world civ.).

Architecture • Arts and Crafts style- an international design movement that flourished between 1860 and 1910. • It stood for traditional craftsmanship using simple forms and often applied medieval, romantic or folk styles of decoration. • It advocated economic and social reform and has been said to be essentially anti-industrial.

Skyscrapers • A skyscraper- a tall, continuously habitable building of many stories, usually designed for office and commercial use. • There is no official definition or height above which a building may be classified as a skyscraper. • One common feature of skyscrapers is having a steel framework from which curtain walls are suspended, rather than load-bearing walls of conventional construction.

Minstrel Shows • The minstrel show- an American entertainment consisting of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music, performed by white people in blackface or, especially after the Civil War, black people in blackface. • Minstrel shows lampooned black people as dim-witted, lazy, buffoonish, superstitious, happy-go-lucky, and musical.
