  1. How do we define the personality traits of a hero? • “There are men so godlike, so exceptional, that they naturally, by right of their extraordinary gifts, transcend all moral judgement or constitutional control: there is no law which embraces men of that calibre: they are themselves law.” (Hipshon) • "WE LOOK UP TO OUR HEROES, ADMIRE THEM, AND EVEN FOLLOW THEM. BUT HOW CAN WE DO ANY OF THESE THINGS IF OUR HEROES DO NOT POSSESS GOOD CHARACTER?“ (Blakeman) • Someone to look up to • Courage • Personality • Helping others, weak and society • Using their talents and powers for a greater purpose • Good character

  2. Why is Jimmy Doyle a hero? • He protects his family in the beginning by not wanting to go to the tournament. Eventhough he knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for him, and that it could change his life forever. ”It’s just my mom at home and… my two little sisters. There’s really no way I can go. But thanks again.” (Klass, 10) • When he does go, he still cares about his family, and is concerned about them. That to me just shows that he is a good person. • He keeps himself humble. Eventhough he is now on the front pages of magazines and newspapers, he still keeps being humble and actually lack confidence. That shows that he has vulnerability, which to me is heroic too.

  3. Why is Jimmy Doyle a hero? • He stands up for his team mates and is there for them. He tries to talk to everybody and be there for them. • When the death threat comes, he doesn’t go home. The only thing that could make him go home would be the fact that his family is worried about him. But he stays there to help show that he has courage to stay there, selflessness to stay there for others, and not go home even though the threat and tension is making him sick. • At the end he takes the bullet for his team mate Augustus. Even though he didn’t move to take, he didn’t move not to either. (Klass, 223) • At the end the bullet broke his knee, and he is not sure if he will ever be able to play basketball again, but he still stays positive and doesn’t blame anyone.

  4. Why is Jimmy Doyle a hero? • He lost his father at the age of 11, and has helped out in his family’s shop ever since, struggling to get enough money for his family’s needs. • He is faithful and keeps his promises. Both when dealing with his friends, family and girlfriend.

  5. Do we have sports heroes like Jimmy Doyle in real life? • Lance Armstrong • Professional cyclist • Beat cancer • Won Tour de France 7 times • Formed Livestrong • (“Lance Armstrong”)

  6. Do we have sports heroes like Jimmy Doyle in real life? • Caroline Wozniacki • Number 1 single womens player in the world (Cooper) • Put Denmark on the map for tennis • Seen as a hero in DK • Played since early age.

  7. Are sports stars in general heroes? • No, they need to have: • Emotion and personality. (What separates heroes) • Confidence, but not too much. • Good media attention.

  8. What makes some sports stars heroes and others not? • “Why them? The fact is that any champion can win a gold medal, hit a Test hundred, kick the goal or score the try that wins a grand final, but becoming a Hero, not just a hero, takes more. To make the cut, a sporting person must win not only our admiration, but also our love and our empathy.” (“What separates heroes”) • “He or she must beat the world's best displaying supernatural skill, tenacity and courage (that's the easy part)...yet at the same time be the girl next door, the larrikin down the pub, flawed, modest or fair enough to win our hearts as well as our minds.” (“What separates heroes”) • Steve Raich- "A HERO IS NOT MERELY SOMEONE WHO CAN HIT A BASEBALL 400 FEET, SINK A 40 FOOT PUTT, NAIL A 3-POINTER, LEAP INTO THE END ZONE, OR WIN A GOLD MEDAL.“ (Blakeman) • Steve Raich- "HEROES ARE MUCH MORE THAN THAT. THEY ARE PEOPLE WHO DO NOT LIVE FOR ACCOLADES OR BIG BANK ACCOUNTS. RATHER THEY LIVE TO FULFILL THEIR GOD-GIVEN DESTINIES AND TO USE THEIR TALENTS AND GIFTS TO LEAVE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE BECAUSE OF THEIR INFLUENCE."(Blakeman)

  9. What makes some sports stars heroes and others not? • “Most of the time the people who are gaining an advantage are cheaters.-But in international world-class competition even heroes cannot be given special treatment.” (Johnson) • Steve Raich- "HEROES ARE MUCH MORE THAN THAT.

  10. What are the reasons the sports heroes have changed within just the last 50 years? • Doping • More media- less privacy- we know all about them • Higher prices for tickets to see sports players in action (Blakeman) • Greed, sports stars gets paid so much now, more wants more. • “Rather than their sporting abilities, it is their misdemeanors in their private lives that are being exposed and published” (Cathcart) • “The sporting heroes of the past lived in a very different world.  A world where their private lives remained private, and the lack of media intrusion allowed them to maintain their privacy and, in turn, elevated them to a status that was beyond reproach” (Cathcart) • Stephen Wagg- "In my life time sports people have moved from people who were well known for playing sport, to people who are even better known for being well known.“ (Cathcart)
