  2. abstain • (v.) to choose not to commit an action • (Everyone demanded that Angus have a piece of birthday cake, but he was on a diet so he abstained.)

  3. bombastic • (adj.) loud, pretentious, arrogant, pompous • (The singer’s bombastic performance disgusted the crowd.)

  4. contemporaneous • (adj.) existing during the same time • (Though they are both hip hop artists, Eazy E and Kanye West were not contemporaneous.)

  5. Demure (duhm-YER) • (adj.) quiet, modest, reserved • (Though everyone else at the party was dancing and going crazy, she remained demure.)

  6. eclectic • (adj.) diverse; having variety • (That bar attracts an eclectic crowd: lawyers, artists, circus clowns, and investment bankers.)

  7. fastidious • (adj.) overly concerned with accuracy and detail • (Mark is so fastidious that he is never able to finish a project because it always seems imperfect to him.)

  8. Garrulous (GAIR-uh-lus) • (adj.) overly talkative • (Some talk show hosts are so garrulous that their guests can’t get a word in edgewise.)

  9. iconoclast • (n.) one who challenges established beliefs • (Jane goes to one protest after another, but she seems to be an iconoclast rather than an activist with a progressive agenda.)
