  2. What is Globalization? A Process of interactions and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations. A process driven by international trades and investments, aided by informational technology.

  3. Pros of Globalization in the US • Brings all the involved nations together. • Causes cultural mingling-learning about other cultures. • Socially more open & tolerant towards things we view as “different” • Produces cheap products in large supply • All nations involved help each other sort out their ecological problems. • Prices of products can be kept at one low price PROS

  4. “Globalization has changed us into a company that searches the world, not just to sell or to source, but to find intellectual capital- the worlds best talents and greatest ideas.” -Jack Welch

  5. Cons of Globalization in the US: • Threats of corporates ruling the country • Possibly leading to communicable diseases and social degeneration (greater gap between social classes) • Bad working conditions -wages -lack of benefits. CONS

  6. The greatest weapon of mass destruction is corporate economic globalization. -- Kenny Ausubel

Economic benefits • Free buying and selling between nations increased • Increased flow of communications by allowing information sharing between person and organizations around the world. • Increased number of jobs world wide • Competition keeps prices relatively low as a result inflation is less likely to occur. • Companies have greater flexibility to operate across borders • Greater simplicity and pace of transporting goods.

  8. ISSUES AND CONCERNS • Growing inequality • Workers feel threatened by low wage competition • Short-term capitol flows threatens of finical crisis and instability • Government less able to offer social protection

  9. Do some countries benefit more than others? YES- raises productivity and living standards of people in countries that open themselves to the global market place. -Greater individual freedom. -access to foreign capital, global export markets, advance technology while breaking monopoly of inefficient and protected domestic producers. EXAMPLE: China – continues to grow in importance and the largest contribution of global growth.

Globalization and human rights • Led to an increase in sweatshop labor (factory where workers do piecework for poor pay and are prevented from forming unions) • Weakened the position of poor countries • Expose poor people to harmful competition • Increase chances for wealthy not poor • Caused an increase in long hours, unhealthy working conditions, absence of schooling and malnutrition of children.

  11. Pressure of globalization has led to child trafficking and forced labor. Five years ago, reports emerged about small groups of children being trafficked and forced to pick cacao beans – the main ingredient for chocolate – in West African plantations. – YaleGlobal

  12. Environmental Impact • Devastating natural habitats • Speeding Global Warming • Increasing air & water pollution

  13. HOW ARE CULTURES AFFECTED? Brings changes Growing dominance of US products May end cultural diversity ARE CULTURES DISSAPEARING? YES- France -food, language, art, movies, café, boutiques. WHY- overwhelming influence of corporate and cultural America.

  14. Does it benefit the US? • YES- • On going trade and investments • Spurs competition • Raises productivity • Raises living standards • Creates economic freedom
