  3. History of Codeine • Codeine is one of the active ingredients found in poppies, and was first isolated in the 19th Century in France • Almost all cough syrups in the United States that require a prescription contain Codeine.

  4. Medical use of codeine • Codeine is a weak narcotic pain-reliever and cough suppressant • Codeine increases tolerance to pain, decreasing discomfort, but the pain still is apparent to the patient. In addition to reducing pain, codeine also causes sedation drowsiness and depresses breathing.

Facts • Codeine frequently is combined with other mild pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or aspirin for more effective pain relief. • in the opiate category of drugs and is related to morphine and heroin. • Codeine is the "least addictive and safest" of all of the opiate drugs prescribed today

  6. Physiological Effects • Target Side Effect- reduces coughing, and relieves mild or moderate pain • Negative Side Effect - drowsiness,sedation, vomiting, and sweating

  7. Psychological Effects • Difficulty concentrating, depression, disorientation, and insomnia. 

  8. Methods of Abuse • Usually abused because it is easy to obtain either OTC in low does or in perscriptions • can be snorted, smoked, injected, or digested

Codeine Withdraw • Symptoms can vary in strength as well as interrupt your ability to accomplish even the smallest of tasks. • Sleeplessness,uncontrollable muscle movements, nausea, headaches, and moderate to severe muscle aches and cramps. • Intense physical cravings for the drug, thoughts of suicide or hurting others, psychosis, irritability, obsess about getting the drug, easily agitated, racing thoughts, and even hallucinations.
