  2. Amerigo Vespucci • Was an Italian explorer • In 1499, he sailed south of where Columbus landed. In 1501, he sailed down the coast of South America. • He was the first to realize that Columbus had found new lands, instead of Asia, and that Earth must be larger than people thought. • A German mapmaker named the new lands after him, calling it America.

  3. Christopher Columbus • Spain paid for his expedition • He explored San Salvador in 1492 • Found a new land • He never gave up on his dream • He was looking for a easier way to Asia

  4. Juan Ponce de Leon • Spain paid for his expedition • In 1522, he landed in Florida • He was the first Spanish explorer to set foot on land that became part the U.S • He was looking for the fountain of youth

  5. Vasco Nunez de Balboa • Spain paid for his expedition • He was the first to explore the isthmus of Panama • In 1513, he crossed the isthmus of Panama • He helped survivors take land from N.A

  6. Jacques Cartier • in 1534, the French paid for his expedition • He tried to find the Northwest passage • He reached the St. Lawrence River • He saw fish in appearance like horses

  7. Henry Hudson • in 1608, a company in England paid for his expedition • he explored the Hudson river and bay • He was looking for the Northwest passage • His crew mutinied and set him adrift in a boat
