  1. Grant Number: IIS-0219909, IIS-0219258 (Collaborative Research)Institution of PI: University of Maryland, University of Pittsburgh PIs: Louiqa Raschid, Vladimir ZadorozhnyTitle: Digital Resource Profiling for Wide Area Applications A comprehensive study of the time-varying behavior of digital resources across different applications, when accessed via the dynamic WAN so as to customize service and information delivery to clients. Managing millions of Latency Profiles (LPs): Relevance Networks (RNs) manage a large collection of LPs and group them into aggregates. No explicit topology and network characteristics are required a priori. RNs provide effective visualization. Adaptive catalog system AReNA:Uses RNs to gather and summarize data on access and performance patterns and predicts latencies that clients should expect in response to requests. Construct Latency Profiles that characterizing the interaction of servers, clients and the network to impact performance. Derive meaningful relationships among client/server pairs using metrics such as mutual information or correlation to predict performance. Activities: Large Scale Experiment (PlanetLab, CNRI Handle System) Simulation-based Study (OPNET Modeler) Analysis and Summarization (Relevance Networks) Continuous Performance Monitoring (AReNA Catalog) Include color picture or graphic. The results of this research will improve the efficiency of interoperable applications and services in wide area networks.  Our Catalog will help to support scalable and flexible information management technologies over the Internet.
