In some cases departments were using the same contractor but paying different rates.

3. A NEW APPROACH Was also a few months into my post and one of the first objectives I set was

To consolidate service so that it is run by a main contractor

4. BENEFITS OF PAY-BY-WEIGHT
Primary advantage is that you are no longer paying to have bins emptied when they have nothing in them but fresh air!
Data is correlated from invoices which now provide a breakdown of costs into rent of containers, cost of collection based on weight, cost of transport to disposal sites, and costs of landfill.
The combination of this type of contract and good recycling means we have an average annual save of 10% of the waste budget.
Have to consider that it is not always the best solution to reduce bins and lifts and this must be done in a considered way. Always worth looking at bin content as just because it is showing low tonnage does not always mean it is not full.
Also do not want ground dumping to occur.

Better communications in house Enviro office works more closely with Procurement office and other university departments to encourage resource efficiency and better management of waste streams.

7. WASTE & RECYCLING TONNAGE 99 - 06
Over this period we have produce an average of 922 tonnes of waste per year and 132 tonnes of that has been recycled each year.
This is a steady average of 14.3% recyclate.

Operational aspects include shared responsibility for the management of the bins. As they were co-funded by our Caterers they have been given partial responsibility for some of the recycling stations. Also involved the SU Bar.
Having pioneered pay by weight in 1999, derby has managed to produce a waste management system that allows constant improvement.
It may be an old adage but you cant manage it if you cant measure it.
Recycling projects are growing from year to year demand does often outstrip supply!
What is clear is that it is expected and more the norm amongst ALL STAFF.
