  2. 04-05 Miami Valley Teen Tobacco Use • 10.9% of MS students smoke increase by 1% from 03-04. • Why Started: A Friend (31% MS, 59% HS) • Why Started: Household (55% MS, 55% HS)

  3. Myth: Most teenagers smoke • FACT: Most DON’T smoke. • Only about 22% of teens in Montgomery County smoke.

  4. Myth: Smoking is no big deal • FACT: The younger a person begins smoking, the greater the risk for developing the numerous illnesses associated with smoking. • Decrease in physical fitness • Increased coughing and phlegm • Respiratory Illnesses • Slower rate of lung growth • Early development of artery disease

  5. Myth: There’s no harm in having an occasional cigarette • FACT: Smokers can not predict when they are going to become addicted to nicotine. • The younger one begins to smoke, the more likely one will become a heavy user. • Each year 20 million people try to quit, 3% success. • 70% of HS seniors who smoked 1-5 cigarettes were smoking 5 years later

  6. Myth: Smoking cigars are safe • FACTS: Smoking cigars can kill you. • Cigar-smokers had a 25% higher mortality rate overall and twice the risk of dying from all forms of cancer

  7. Myth: Chewing tobacco is safe • FACTS: Chewing tobacco is a associated with: • Bad breath • Discoloration of teeth • Cancers of gum, mouth,larynx, pharynx, and esophagus

  9. Myth: People think you’re cool if you smoke. • FACTS: Survey of HS Seniors • 72% thought smoking was a “Dirty Habit” • 71% disproved of people under the age of 18 • 74% Date people who did not smoke • 61% thought that becoming a smoker reflected poor judgment

Other Facts • Lose about 14 minutes of Life expectancy for each cigarette smoked • To age 65, people who smoke 20 or more cigarettes a day, die at almost twice the rate for non-smokers • 85% of occasional smokers become regular full time smokers • Pregnant Women who smoke • Twice as likely as non-smokers to have miscarriage • More likely to have a premature birth
