  1. Symbolism Practice Assignment Feedback “Echo and Narcissus”

  2. The basics… • Some of you did not include or adhere to standard Honors Language Arts guidelines, including: • Personal pronouns. This assignment is considered literary analysis. There are no use of personal pronouns (I/me/my/we/etc.), unless otherwise guided by your teacher. • ICE quotes. Some of you did not include one; some of you forgot how to format them. There is no excuse for having this incorrect at this point in the year. • Evidence of editing and revision. Yes, this was a rough draft, but you make your teacher and peers go “digging” for any good ideas that you have when you include noticeable errors and/or ideas.

  3. Examples • You are going to see some of your peers’ work. First, it will be the image s/he chose, the second will be the explanation. • Your job is to decide HOTS or LOTS for each slide. Be prepared to justify your reasoning! • See if you can figure out how this person would have scored, based on s/he has included. • Also, some images were not able to be pasted, so a similar image was inserted from Google Images instead.

  4. Student Sample #1: HOTS OR LOTS?

  5. Student Sample #1 continued…     The picture of the cave symbolizes the character Echo from "Echo and Narcissus".  It symbolizes her because in caves when people talk there is a echo that follows the voice. Caves represents the character because Echo was put on a curse/punishment that she couldn't speak and had to repeat what others say just like caves.  Another reason is that Hera cursed Echo by saying, "...But from this day on, you shall be able to repeat what other people say-and never speak unless someone else speaks first(290)".  So it seems like caves and Echo are similar and they were both punished to repeat what people say.  Lastly, the picture of the cave is really pretty and in the story they described Echo  as being very pretty. That's how caves represents/symbolize the character Echo from the story "Echo and Narcissus".

  6. Evaluation of previous example What this student did well: • General structure of paragraph is solid, including the following: • Topic sentence that appropriately introduces the connection and the title of the story • Transitions that make the paragraph easy to follow • Appropriate concluding sentence What this student needs to improve • Finding a picture that shows HOTS. This picture is LOTS because a cave that “echoes” is very obvious. • The LOTS picture also makes most of the reasoning LOTS. Most reasons are what happens to the character and her physical self, rather than who she is as a character. • Correcting the ICE quote punctuation

  7. Student Sample #2: HOTS OR LOTS?

  8. Student Sample #2 continued…    This is how this picture symbolized Narcissus. This symbolizes Narcissus because of how he rejected echo and how he got cursed to only love himself. This made him locked in his own world not knowing what goes on around him. He was trapped from other people in his own world, loving himself forever. What this picture also represents about him is how deep of a mess he got into about not loving, but instead rejecting echo because he only loves himself. A quote that shows this is, "He is altogether eaton up with self love..." (292). This was a good quote because it says how selfish he was and how he had no inner beauty, but only outer beauty. This is how this picture can symbolize Narcissus

  9. Evaluation of previous example What this student did well: • Selected a picture and made a connection that shows HOTS. It looks at the personality or traits of the character. • Reasoning starts outstrong to show the connection. • ICE quote is structured and punctuated correctly (although the … are not necessary). What this student needs to improve • The reasoning begins following apart pretty quickly into the paragraph. Student does not continue to explain how the lock picture connects with reasons in the paragraph. • Lacking appropriate paragraph structure, most noticeably in the topic and concluding sentences. • Noticeable lack of editing and revision, evidenced by noticeable errors of convention.

  10. Student Sample #3: HOTS OR LOTS?

  11. Student Sample #3 continued…     This image best represents the character Narcissus from the book, Echo and Narcissus.  This image can relate to Narcissus because in the picture is fire, and the fire represents fury, scorn, anger, etc.  Narcissus can relate to this image because he seemed very angry towards Echo when she seemed to have some feelings for him.  An example of that in the book is when Echo came near him and he was not to happy about it.  "But Narcissus flung the beautiful nymph away from him in scorn." (292)  This quote can be compared to the picture because when people put trash or something they do not like in a fire pit, it is destroyed and ruined forever, just like Narcissus did to Echo when he shoved her away.   It made Echo so upset that her heart broke because Narcissus "threw her in a fire pit" and she got destroyed. This is why this image best represents the character Narcissus from the book, Echo and Narcissus.

  12. Evaluation of previous example Overall, we concluded that this example was strong and showed HOTS, evidenced by the following: • Picture symbolizes an important aspect of the character’s personality • The connection between the character and the picture is consistent throughout the paragraph, meaning that the student keeps reminding us of how/why the picture symbolizes the character. • Even though the last reason is slightly obvious, the rest of the paragraph shows deep thinking and analysis.

  13. Now what? • Look over your own practice assignment, as well as what is highlighted on the rubric. • You will have five minutes to change where you lost points. • Be ready to check in and share what changes you made with a partner!
