  3. Practising Techniques • You must not practise on the general public (including friends and family) • You must not practise on children of any age • Do not try to do therapy • Do not practise techniques you have not been formally taught - i.e. from YouTube, DVD etc

Hypnoidal States Hypnoidal States - Naturally Occurring Altered State of Consciousness defined by Boris Sidis 1909 Waking Hypnosis • Occurs naturally when attention fixed on one thing or experienced several times a day & absorbs you to the exclusion of all else. Generally few seconds - but may be longer • Characterised by • rapport • representational systems aligned • directed thought pattern

Day-dreaming & Reverie • Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic day-dream / mini relaxation vacation • IPI - Imaginal Processing Inventory ( Singer 1966) - Yale University (1950's Educational Psychologists warned that day-dreaming could lead to neurosis or psychosis, Eric Klinger 1987 American Psychiatric Association) • Levinson 2002 Wisconsin University - Day dreaming improves memory and creative thinking • Characterised by • train of thought • moving away from immediate surrounding • more and more immersed in inner thoughts • emotional content

Hypnogogic and Hypnopompic Hypnogogic Sensory features • Fleeting or rapid - random speckles, lines, patterns, geometric colours or monochrome figures or images • Sense of heaviness Hypnopompic • Out of body experiences / floating / falling / hypic jerk or myoclonic twitch (startle reflex) • Paraesthesia • Synaesthesia • Proprioceptive effect - numbness, change in body size

Light Trance lower beta  - upper alpha (8-12htz Attainability 90%-97% Characteristics • Close Eyes -40% of brain capacity internally focused / encourage other modality • Move their eyes rapidly - inner processing (rapid eye movement or REM) • Don't move - increased passivity (economy of movement) • Breathe more slowly - parasympathetic activity • Swallow more frequently – lachrymation • Have flattened or relaxed facial features - relaxation of muscle tension • hand remains floppy - i.e. no catalepsy • can hear external sounds

Medium Trance Alpha Attainability 70%-90% Characteristics • Head sinks towards chest • Body sinks in chair - relaxation • Their jaw slackens - muscle tension reduces • Facial features flatten more • Eyelids stiffen (catalepsy) • Skin becomes flushed or pale • They feel lethargic - and drowsy, motor activity decreases • Heavy feeling in their limbs - suggestions of heaviness • May experience partial loss of sensation (partial anaesthesia) • Reduced awareness of body - specific or all over • arm catalepsy • loss of interest in external sounds • lose startle relax - first stage of analgesia

Deep Trance (somnambulistic state) Delta- Theta Attainability 10% - 15% Characteristics • Amnesia - (about 20%) full or partial • Out-of body feelings - spiritual feelings • Hallucination • Full anaesthesia • Somnambulism - pallor to lips • Slump in chair • Appear fully wide awake • Have eyes open • Walk and talk • Take a long time to respond to suggestion • Trance logic - Can you tell me your name - 'Yes"

Introduction • Rapport - be interested in them (60% remission) • Answer their questions about hypnosis - misconceptions & fears • Find out what they want - goals / problem thinking - establish purpose • Case history - what, why here, who, likes • Name - yours and theirs • Voice - hear my voice • Sleep - like sleep • Control - collaboration • 90% of effort here - Erickson - seed, utilize, reframe

  11. Induction • Effecting comfortable eye closure - adequate preparation necessary • Methods - visual, auditory, sensory • Eyes closed - focus on inner world • make comfortable • leg position • move away from waking state

  12. Deepening • Creating a state for working - fluctuating depth • Rapport • Breathing • Heightened inner focus • Safe & secure • Down and float • Encourage dissociation "go"

  13. Post Hypnotic Suggestion / Therapy • Phrased positively • Relating to one subject at a time • Direct or indirect • Repeat suggestions (3 *) • Use imagination • Time specific - SMART

  14. Awakening • remove suggestions - no longer required • return to full consciousness • re-orientate • re-integrate • positive experience • hypermnesia to suggestion – well-being suggested

  15. Homework • specific task / thought / behaviour / • maintain change • assess motivation • reinforce therapy / suggestion • responsibility • take process outside therapy room • self-hypnosis

Awakening • Failure to awaken - fallen asleep - forgoten to remove suggestions - enjoying and want to continue - resistance • Strategies to awaken - raise your voice - move around - gently blow on eye lids - charge by the hour! • Always -Remove suggestions - Use a signal • Eyes Open - before awakening - during awakening • Increased Suggestibility - good health & feelings -reinforce suggestions
