The E-Book • E-Books accounted for 8.5% of all Book Sales in the US in May 2010, compared with 2.9% in May 2009. • As of January, 2011, e-book sales are less than 1%- 3% of all book sales in Australia. • 80% of Australian readers still very much prefer a traditionally bound book to anything on a screen. (SMH Jan) • Tertiary libraries- E-Format Preferred. • For example: Random House Australia currently have approximately 6,000 e-books ready to read, including international and Australian titles, and an ongoing e-book program of new releases • Apps abound! • The great teen paradox!

  3. Why books still matter? • The importance of shared experience • The need to read for pleasure. • The need for permanent historical artifacts. • Higher degree of distraction when reading from a screen. • The need to promote ‘hard reading’ to encourage resilience.
