  4. ELD Components Phonology: Speech, sounds Pragmatics How you use language Morphology: Parts of words, verb tenses Semantics: Meaning of words or sentences Vocabulary Syntax: Grammar, sentence structure, language rules Lexicon: Collection of words you know

Phonology • Studies the SOUND patterns of a specific language • Phonology describes the way sounds function within a given language or across languages • An important part of phonology is studying which sounds are distinctive units within a language - in English, for example, /r/ and /l/ are distinctive units of sound Beginning Sound Final Sound lock rock roll roar

  6. Phonology lessons will center on… • Hearing: physical demonstration. Discrimination exercises e.g., ship or sheep • Which vowel sounds occur in: “it”, “bit”, “eat”, “fit”, “feet”, “seat”, “sit” • Production. Physically making sounds • Expanded contexts

  7. Phonology lessons(cont.) • Students require steady practice and muscle training. • Pronunciation is a motor skill that needs practice. • Differences in sound systems have a phonological basis: they depend on variation in speech organ positions or breath control.

  8. Morphology • The study of meaningful units of language and how they are combined to form words • Parts of words; adding affixes to change base words • Verb tenses • Word families

  9. Syntax • The grammatical arrangement of words in sentences • Focuses on the form of language not meaning • The rules that govern the structure of sentences • Horizontal flow L  R • Sentences have an underlying structure that can be manipulated
