ConfigMgr OSD vs. MDT OSD • MDT = LiteTouch Deployment • Some from of interaction required to start deployment • Deployment options are based on the Installer’s decisions • Name • Domain • Deployment time app installs • Designed to be lightweight and easy to implement • No scheduling or central monitoring capabilities • ConfigMgr = Zero-Touch Deployment • No interaction required to start deployment • Deployment options are based on “traits” of the system • Name • Collection membership • Database Record • Designed to be robust and centrally managed with no interaction required • The exception: User Driven Installs

Windows 8 Challenges • The road to Windows 8 goes through Windows 7 • 98% of all apps that work on Win7, will work on Win8 • Don’t stop your Win7 Migrations • XP goes End-of-Life April 8, 2014 • The “User-Centric” model • Target the User NOT the system • Difficult for Enterprise Admins to grasp • Must learn to relinquish control of some things – i.e. Start Menu • Hardware – still catching up • Not from a performance perspective… • From a capabilities perspective

The Microsoft Store • First Ask – Do I really need the store? • MS Store access requires a Microsoft Account (Hotmail, Outlook.com, Live) • Apps are Licensed to the User– up to 5 devices • Do Government Regulations allow me to put my app in the store? (HIPPA, PII, etc.) • Read and understand the EULA for the MS Store

To change the color scheme then then use the SystemDefaultBackgroundColor setting in the unattend.xml • Only Windows 8 Enterprise or domain-joined Windows 8 Pro can customize the Start Screen • Links to websites will be maintained during the copy process; however icons for these links will not be retained. • Non-default Windows Store Apps cannot be added to the image; doing so will cause Sysprep to fail.
