  2. Agenda • Reading Goal: • Show how the setting contributes to the story. • Today’s Big Question: • What is the most important thing in a close relationship between two people? • Team Cooperation Goal: complete all tasks.

  3. Vocabulary

  4. Read pgs 40-46 (stop at “Yes, they’re married. Why?”) silently. • Is it significant that Beatty recognizes the source of the phrase quoted by the woman? In what way? • What else do we learn about Mildred through her conversation with Montag in the bedroom? • What do you think Montag means when he says to himself, “The living room; what a good job of labeling that was now”? • List several more details about the setting that illustrate how society has programmed the people to be unthinking and uncaring. • How does the setting of the story change whenever Clarisse appears? What do you think this means? • In which settings—firehouse, outside, or in his house—does Montag have the greatest conflicts? Why?

  5. Reflection # heads • Why do you think Montag asks Mildred if she remembers when they first met? • How does Mildred’s habit of lying in bed in a zombie-like state affect Montag? • What does Montag mean when he says to himself that there is not one but three walls between him and Mildred? • Do you think that Montag is so upset and sad because he doesn’t feel connected to Mildred or anyone else? Why? • What is the most important thing in a close relationship between two people?
