  2. Life • Was born in New York on May, 3rd 1919 • Father was a Musicologist • Studied Sociology at Harvard University • Was a member of the Communist Party • Traveled the American South collecting and recording traditional songs

  3. After Service • Formed the People’s Songs after his service in the war • Published successful radical music material • Was tried for inciting communist ideologies in his music in 1956 • Case was dismissed and he was released from prison in 1962

  4. Music and Present Day • Started publishing music about the environment in the late Cold War • One of the first to bring Environmental issues forward through song • Today he is 82 and a member of the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism
