Where Should You Be in the Process? • Visited schools in the spring and summer • Narrow down your list of schools to apply to • Bring list of schools to your guidance counselor • Register(ed) with Naviance • Visit the Guidance website: www.pvcsd.org/hs • Registered to take SAT in October or November – New security procedures: I.E- Picture

  3. What to do to finish search? • Attend college fair at Yorktown High School on October 21, 2014, 6:30. • College representatives visit PVHS – sign up through Naviance! • College open houses • College tours

  4. Applications • Paper applications • Online applications • SUNY applications (2 parts) • CUNY applications • Common application (accepted at over 500 colleges) www.commonapp.org

  5. What goes into an application? • High school transcript • Senior classes/report card • School profile • SAT scores – sent through collegeboard.com • ACT scores – sent through actstudent.org • Resume • Letters of recommendation • Counselor, two teachers • Essay/personal statement

  6. Sample Essay Questions • Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. • Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what lessons did you learn? • Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again? • Describe a place or environment where you are perfectly content. What do you do or experience there, and why is it meaningful to you? • Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.

Other Important Information • Early Action (EA)/Early Decision (ED) • Deadlines!!!! • Tell your counselor when you send applications through the mail or online • Transcript release/Waive right to see letters • Give teachers time to write letters and counselor enough time to process applications • NCAA • Scholarships –check out Naviance & Guidance web page for an updated list
