  3. Reading Proficiency • Proficiency of all students in 2007 ranged from a high of 58.8% in 5th grade to a low of 36.9% in 6th grade. • Increase in performance in grades 4, 5, and 8. Decrease in performance in grades 3 and 6, and marked decrease in grade 11. • Lowest proficiency among students transitioning from elementary to middle school and middle school to high school.

  4. Reading Proficiency • Proficiency of Caucasians and Asians consistently higher than other groups. • Decreased proficiency of Caucasians in grades 3, 6, 7, and 11. Increases in grades 8 and 9. • Asians proficiency increased in grades 5, 7, and 8 and decreased in grades 3, 9, and 11.

  7. Reading Proficiency • Intermittent increases and decreases in most grades for African Americans. Steady decreases in grade 11. Large increase in 5th grade. • Increases for Hispanics in grades 4, 5, and 8. Decrease in grade 6 and marked decrease in grade 11. • American Indians increase in proficiency in grades 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8.

  11. Reading Proficiency • English Language Learners increased proficiency in grades 3, 4, 5, and 8, with the greatest gain in grade 5. • Substantial decrease in grade 11.

  13. Reading Proficiency • Proficiency of Economically Disadvantaged Students increased in grades 4, 5, and 8, with the largest gain in grade 8. • Proficiency is low for Students with Disabilities. Fourth graders made steady gains. Eleventh graders had smaller decrease than other groups.

  19. Math Proficiency • Proficiency of all students in 2007 ranged from a high of 46% in 4th grade to a low of 25.2% in 7th grade. • Lowest proficiency among students in middle school. • Gains in grades 4 through 11.

  36. Science Proficiency • Proficiency of all students in 2007 ranged from a high of 79% in 3rd grade to a low of 23.2% in 8th grade. • Steady decline in proficiency from grade 3 to grade 8, and an increase in grade 9. Decline partially offset by steady annual increases in all but the 8th grade.
