  10. For every ton of waste paper recycled, 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space is used. (189.09 Y3 saved) Every ton of recycled office paper saves 380 gallons of oil. (21,774 gallons saved) The production of a ton of paper requires 17 trees (974.1 trees saved) and 7,000 gallons of water (401,100 gallons saved).   11. Currently • Pick-ups 2-3 week intervals • @ 5 hours to complete entire route

  12. Few Minor problems…. • Some capability between scheduled pick-ups to empty containers – weight of container poses problem often • Not enough containers • Relocating containers in other parts of the building

  13. Major Problem…….. Mixing food items with paper Three times at two different locations (entire load had to be dumped) One organization reported cigarette butts/ashes being in the bottom of one of the containers

  14. Needs……….. • Manpower • Vehicle with lift capability We are currently missing: • Shredded FUOA/classified documents • Individual organizations that hire local shredding companies

  15. Inhabitants of North America • Consumes 11,916 sheets of paper each (24 reams annually) • Each ream weighs @ 5 lbs • Therefore, each consumes @ 120 lbs • Computer usage does not seem to be slowing the amount of paper we use

  16. Considerations • Consider # people in office • Set your target based on unique everyday usage or • “Piggyback” on installation target

EMS Program Example for Solid Waste Reduction • Facility: USAAVNC and Fort Rucker • Responsible Person: Thomas W.Young • Start Date: July 1, 2005 • Goal/Objective: Increase amount of Office Paper recycled • Target: Increase amount of office paper recycled by 5% normalized to flying hours by the end of CY 06. • Strategy: Increased office paper waste reduction by applying recycling techniques

  18. Actions to Achieve Objectives and Targets • Determine current CY 2005 amounts that are being recycled. • Conduct polling of EIT members regarding recycling participation • Evaluate (by poll) whether or not the current program is working for all participants.

Remember: • Goals are useless unless there is an underlying program set to achieve them (No point in setting goals that are not achievable). • The EMS will be judged ultimately by management (internally) and auditor/public/stakeholders (externally) by its ability to achieve its stated objectives and targets.

  22. Remember: • Establish specific and measurable documented objectives and targets that addresses significant environmental issues. • The EMS will be used by management to assess the organizations environmental performance.
