How much? • There are over 3 million animals tested on in the United Kingdom alone each year • In the US, about 2,567,713 million animals are tested on each year on average • The US is one of the biggest countries to test on animals
Society’s View • Always on the fence about the issue • A person doesn’t always research the subject of animal testing • There are groups that care, like PETA

Experimenters then shoved tubes down the mice’s throats every day for 10 days to force-feed them the PQQ, after which they were killed and cut up for analysis.”- Mar’s Heartless Animal Experiments

PETA • Also known as the “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals” • Has been encouraging people to boycott any company not on their list • Labels that state “Not Tested on Animal” could be misleading
PETA’s Mission Statement • People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 2 million members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world.PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds and other "pests," and the abuse of backyard dogs.PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns.
The Ethics of it • Animal testing is not ethical to some but not always most • Some think it’s better to risk the lives of animals than their species • Others think it is unethical to reference to the fact that it is killing
Christian View • In the Bible, Proverbs 12:10 it is quoted. “Whoever is righteous regardeth the life of his beast, but the tender mercies of the wicked is cruel.” • Catechism of the Catholic Church • Animals have a purpose as do plants • Doesn’t give humans the right to disrespect what is in the environment • Doesn’t make eating or testing of animals as immoral • Does protest cruelty on animals for no reason
Christian View • Papal Encyclicals • Article 2417, “Medical and scientific experimentation on animals is a morally acceptable practice if it remains within reasonable limits and contributes to caring for or saving human lives.” • The church is on both sides
Christian View • Catholic Social Teaching (CST) • Shows that there is human dignity for humans only and solidarity • The Catholic Church doesn’t see it as a necessary view
