Definitions • Virus- A software that damages your computer system. • Color Cartridges- a color cartridge is the thing that holds the ink for your computer's printer. • World Wide Web- A part of the internet  that let's you jump from site to site a lot quicker. • E-mail- A mail accessory that sends mail over the Internet. • Online- When your computer is connected to the Internet. • Network- A bunch of computers attached together to share information and programmes. • Speaker- The part of the computer that plays the sounds. • RAM (Random Access Memory)- Memory chips in the computer that hold information to run your programs. • ROM (Read Only Memory)-  A permanent memory chip that cannot be changed.  This memory runs the computer. • Bit- A small piece of information that gives directions to the computer. • Byte-  A byte is also information that gives the computer directions.  A byte contains eight bits. • Software- The programs that run on the computer. • Hardware-  The actual parts of the computer. • Windows-  A program used by computers to organize the files and programs. • DOS (Disk Operating System)-   The program that comes on the computer that runs programs and helps you to save and open files.

  4. How To Take Care of Your Computer • 1. Keep your work area clean. • 2. Save your work often. • 3. Hold disks and CD-ROMs by the edges. • 4.Close all programmes before you shut down your computer. • 5. Don't bring food or drinks near your computer. • 6. Dust your computer and shake dirt out of the keyboard. • 7. Keep magnets away from your computer and disks.  Magnets can erase information.

Computers History •  The computer has been through many changes to become the machine that we use today.  The idea for the computer began with people who wanted an easier way to calculate numbers.  Now we use the computer for everything.  • 500 B.C. - Abacus was invented in Babylonia. It is a calculator made of strings and beads. • 1642-  Blaise Pascal invented the first automatic calculator.  It did not run by electricity it ran by turning gears and wheel • 1801- Joseph-Marie Jacquard invented a punch card that could be used for weaving.   It made sure that the threads went through in the right order.  This is important because computers use codes and order to work. • 1833- Charles Babbage invented all of the parts of the modern computer. • 1940's- Vacuum tubes were invented and used in the computer. It was the most important invention. • 1947- Second generation computers didn't use vacuum tubes anymore. • 1950s- The computers ran by a chip.  • 1960- Computers were affordable and small enough to fit in a home. • 1980- The beginning of the computers like those we use today.
