  1. Misanthrope n. Hating mankind • Mystique, the misanthrope from X-men, had a negative outlook toward the world and even said “All Homo Sapiens should die.”

  2. Sullen(ly) Adv. gloomily or resentfully silent or repressed • Adelisa didn’t agree with her mother, and so se sullenly walked to her room.

  3. Sinewy Adj. tough, vigorous, firm, resilient • The sinewy snowman from Frozen spoke about how he would not melt during Spring. • My grandfather, a sinewy old man, shows all the 50 years he’s worked in the fields on his leathery skin.

  4. Hale Adj. free from disease or infirmity; robust; vigorous: • The hale man was full of strength and energy, that he battled the Lochness monster fearlessly.

  5. Provincial n. having or showing the manners, viewpoints, etc. of a person from the country • The provincial woman slurped her tea; she did not know to sip her tea with elegance when in the queen’s presence!

  6. Impertinence: • the state or quality of being rude (N.) • She expressed much impertinence towards her teacher.

  7. Countenance: • the face as an indication of mood, emotion, or character (N.) • The character in the movie possessed a dark countenance.

  8. Stalwart: • marked by outstanding strength and vigor of body, mind, or spirit (Adj.) • The stalwart soldier was given the Purple Heart Award.

  9. Gaiter: • a cloth or leather leg covering reaching from the instep to above the ankle or to mid-calf or knee (N.) A tall, waterproof boot • The fishermen are in need of gaiters when out at sea.

  10. Morose: • having a sullen and gloomy disposition (Adj.) • The tone of many poets convey a morose emotion within the readers.

  11. Guttural • Adjective - Harsh; throaty The sick, elderly man spoke with a deep, guttural voice.

  12. Tacit • Adjective- understood without being spoken I was given tacit approval for my project; the teacher didn’t announce the a-ok, but she made it clear to me that my idea was good.

  13. Vexatious • Adjective- causing annoyance, frustration, or worry Her vexatious behavior resulted in her admittance to a military school.

  14. Phlegm • Noun- Mucus One of the four “humors” believed to determine a person’s personality type. A phlegmatic person moved slowly… He spent the whole class coughing up and swallowing his phlegm.

  15. Loth/Loath • Adjective- Reluctant; unwilling Jimmy was loth to let Susan borrow his notes again, since she lost them the first time.

  16. Gaunt (adj) • Definition: Extremely thin and bony; hunger • Example: Heroine addicts over time become very gaunt due to the drugs.

  17. Alms (n) • Definition: anything given as charity • Example: Annie gave alms to the goodwill.

  18. Grotesque (adj) • Definition: comically or repulsively ugly or distorted. • Example: Denny baked grotesque brownies.

  19. Sundry (adj, n) • Definition: of various kinds; several. Various items not important enough to be mentioned individually. • Example: A sundry amount of ingredients go into making pasta.

  20. Repose(d) adj, n • Definition: tranquility or the state of rest. To change the posture, appearance of something. • Example: While meditating you're in repose.
