  1. “Subbed into the Story” Romans 5:6-10

  2. Surprise Endings: Paraprosdokians!  Paraprosdokians are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected. I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice. Where there's a will, I want to be in it. If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

  3. Surprise Substitute at the Cross! “For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would even dare to die”(Romans 5:7). Based on the value of human life – but who would die for a criminal? Matthew 27:17 – (Pilate) – “Whom do you want me to release, Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?”

  4. Barabbas: Murderer on Death Row “a notorious prisoner” (Matthew 27:16) “among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection” (Mark 15:7) (Note: insurrection – same charge as Jesus) Genesis 9:6 taught, “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.”

  5. By Contrast: Jesus, Holy and Pure Pilate’s testimony: Jesus is innocent! Luke 23:4 – “I find no guilt in Him” Luke 23:14 “I have found no guilt in Him” Luke 23:15 – (Herod) – “nothing deserving death”

  6. Surprise Substitute: Jesus Gets the Cross, Barabbas gets “a pass!” Jesus, the innocent, gets the cross; Barabbas, the guilty, get’s released! Luke 23:16 – (Pilate) – I will release Jesus! Luke 23:17 – (crowd) – we want Barabbas! Luke 23:20 – “Pilate wanting to release Jesus” Luke 23:22 – (Pilate) “I will punish/release Jesus” Luke 23:25 – “released Barabbas; Jesus crucified”

  7. Why Would the Crowd Make This Choice? Our proclivity to sin* “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me” (Psalm 51:5).“Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin’” (John 8:34). Why do we make wrong, sinful choices?(Paul) “I do the very thing I hate” (Romans 7:15)

  8. We Are Barabbas!(Subbed into the Story) 10 Commandments – (Exodus 20) James 2:10 – “He who keeps the whole law…” Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death” Fighting off the “Yes, but…” syndrome“we are without excuse” (Romans 1:20).

  9. Full Circle Back to Romans 5 We were helpless (nothing can be done) We were enemies of God (Romans 5:10) God moved in His grace in Jesus Christ! “He made Him who knew no sin TO BE SIN on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

  10. Subbed into the Story…One More Time Because of the Gospel, Jesus’ victory is OUR victory! We are joint-heirs with Christ! (Romans 8:17) “Because I live, you shall live” (John 14:19). The key? Receive His finished work (John 1:12).
