Formal Divisions • Major sections of a piece • Defined by strong cadences and rhythmic factors • Labeled with capital letters • Open/Closed • Closed sections cadence in the original key • Open sections cadence in other keys • Simple/Compound • Simple (two-part or three-part) • Compound (each section could be a two-part or three-part)

Two-Part (Binary) Form • Two main sections • Both sections are often repeated • Most Baroque dance movements are in binary form (ex. gavotte, waltz, etc.) • First section • Open construction (ends with a half cadence or cadence in a related key) • Second section • Longer than first • Closed construction (ends with a perfect authentic cadence in original key)
