The Three Story Intellect • Input Questions • First level of house: basic questions that can be addressed with observation • Similar to taking data for the results of lab; observe and describe what you see • Ex: How many colonies are there? What types of colonies are they? • Process Questions • Second level of house: Questions that ask you to analyze, then draw conclusions, explain why, infer the reasons • Similar to writing conclusions; explain why something happened, and if you change something, how you think that will affect your results • Ex: Why did the hand sanitizer not show a halo? One explanation may be that bacteria have acquired resistance towards antiseptic agents in hand sanitizer. Another explanation may be that there were errors that biased the results. • Output Questions • Third level of house: Questions that ask you to think beyond what you see • Similar to “PA”; ask you to apply what you know, to make predictions about other experiments, imagine other outcomes if a variable is changed • Ex: What can we change in this experiment to increase our understanding of antiseptic effects on bacteria?

Questions by Level Level 1 • How many birds are there? • How do they stay on the twig? • What are the birds looking at? • What species of bird are these? • How many directions are the birds looking at? Level 2 • Why do the birds scrunch up together like that? • Are these a similar species to birds in cold climates that scrunch up together to keep warm? • How can so many birds rest on one small twig? What is the material is the plant made of/special material? How much do each bird weigh? • What environment do the birds live in, given their coat color and color pattern? Why that environment? • What functions do the colors of the birds serve? How are colors an adaptation to their environment? (May be Level 3) • What do the birds eat given their beak size and shape? (May be Level 3) • Are the birds doing a mating dance? Do they mate in groups? Are these birds polygamous? (May be Level 3) Level 3 • How can humans use the material in the plant to make strong products? • Can the wood of that plant be used to build sturdy wooden structures?
