  1. “Some Day My Prince Will Come” -Dave Brubeck

  2. Introduction • Starts out with a beautiful piano solo playing the melody with accompaniment for about 8 measures. • The chord progressions for the intro include: IMaj7, III7, IVMaj7, VI7, ii7, VI7, II7, V7

  3. Form • Saxophone plays for 40 measures repeating every 8. • Piano comes in next with the same pattern.

  4. Melody • The melody is heard all throughout the piece. • In the intro the melody is more straight forward (Less Improvisation) • Throughout the improv section, the melody is heard more through the harmonic progression rather than through a single melodic line • Listen to the bass! • What

  5. Timbre • Warm • Blues • Sweet • Piano and the Saxophone contrast a little bit • The piano has a warmer timbre • The Saxophone has a Sweeter timbre • It is most commonly played in the key of Bb.

  6. Rhythm • Time signature: 12/8 • Tempo: the dotted quarter = 65 • The bass line is the motor and is NOT swung • The drums are part of the motor as well and do play a swung rhythm • The drums start with a triple feel in the beginning then go to a duple feel.

  7. Expression • Understanding of the Piece • Lyrics: “Some day my prince will comeSome day we'll meet againAnd away to his castle we'll goTo be happy forever I know Some day when spring is hereWe'll find our love anewAnd the birds will singAnd wedding bells will ringSome day when my dreams come true”

  8. Expression Contin… • The lyrics alone give a GREAT visual of everything the composer wants to be expressed in the piece. • Love • Romance • Hope
