  1. Social Studies Vocabulary Longitude & Latitude

  2. Longitude • These are the lines that go around the earth vertically. • They are all the same length. • Zero is the Prime Meridian. • The lines count east or west to 180 degrees, stopping at the International Date Line.

  3. Latitude • These are the lines that go around the earth horizontally. • The equator starts at zero and the lines count up north and south. • The North and South Poles are at 90 degrees north or south.

  4. Northern and Southern Hemispheres • These parts of the world are separated by the equator. • They are named based on the direction they are from the equator.

  5. Eastern and Western Hemispheres • These parts of the world are separated by the Prime Meridian (P.M.). • They are named based on the direction they are from the P.M.

  6. North and South Poles • These points on the world represent 0 degrees latitude North or South. • They always stay the same.

  7. Equator • This line goes around the middle of the earth horizontally. • It is 0 degrees latitude. • The sun points directly at this line at the Spring and Fall Equinoxes. • This line divides the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

  8. Prime Meridian • This line divides the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. • This line travels from the North Pole to the South Pole through London, England (think big clock), part of France, and part of Africa. • The International Date Line is on the other side of the world.

  9. International Date Line • This line separates the time zones. • It is two different days on either side side of the line. • It is twelve hours from the Prime Meridian to this line whether you go east or west. • It goes from the North Pole to the South Pole. • It is not straight.

  10. Tropic of Cancer • This line is at 23 degrees North. • It is as far north as the Sun travels during the summer of the Northern Hemisphere.

  11. Tropic of Capricorn • This line is 23 degrees south. • It is as far south as the sun travels during the Northern Hemisphere’s winter and the Southern Hemisphere’s summer.
