  1. SS6G14.a What was the Impact of Language and Religion on Australia?

  2. The official language of Australia is the result of British colonization and expansion. • Native Aborigines had inhabited Australia for centuries. • 1768-Captain James Cook explored and mapped parts of eastern Australia. • Claimed it for England. • Named it New South Wales Language of Australia

  3. 1788-England began building prisons to house convicts. • It was considered a penal (prison) colony. • 1823- first parliament established and they began establishing criminal and civil courts. • 1868- more than 170,000 convicts had arrived from England • The language of the prisoners, guards, courts, and businesses was English.

  4. French became interested in the western part of Australia. The English didn’t want this so they colonized the west as fast as they could to keep the French out. • The English language followed them to the west.

  5. Gold was discovered. That attracted more people from England and Ireland. • Many Chinese immigrants came too, but did not become an important language. There were many more English speakers. • Australia gained their independence from Great Britain and didn’t want too many immigrants. They allowed English and American to move to Australia but denied Africans and Asians. • This encouraged even more English-speakers to come to Australia.

  6. English is the official language. • English is the most common language, since today 20% of the population was born in another country and speaks a different language.

  7. 1788-Christianity was introduced • Irish convicts were mostly Roman Catholic. • Other convicts were Anglican and Methodist. • 1800s- More Faiths Brought…(Church of England, Methodist, Catholic, Presbyterian, Congregationalist, and Baptist) • Today, most Australians are Christian. • The Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Church claim the most members. • Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, and Hindis combined make up less than 5% of the population. Religion

  8. What religion did most of the Australia’s Irish prisoners practice? Why did the Australian government restrict immigration after it became independent from Great Britain in 1901? What did English Captain James Cook name the first colony of Australia? What language did the first European settlers speak in Australia? In 1788, what religion was introduced to Australia?
