  3. Setting a Purpose • Provides you with a reason for this text! • WHY are we doing this? • WHAT am I to learn from this? • WHAT will I DO with this information?

  4. No Provided Purpose? • What would you like us to know and understand? • How would you like us to read this text? • Do you want us to take notes, create an outline, or mark the text? • What strategies should we use to help us identify the information relevant to the reading task?

  5. Set Your Own! • Look for interesting details. • Ask questions about the title. • Look for author’s opinion. • To learn new information.

  6. Ways to Set a Purpose (cont.) • Make a connection to the piece • Does this text remind you of anything? • Who is the author? What do you know about him or her? Where does his or her belief system come through in the piece?

  7. Pace During Reading • How does your PURPOSE for reading influence your PACE during reading? • Write and reflect…..

  8. What Good Readers Know About Pace…. • Do you read ALL texts at the same rate? • Why or why not? • Do you read your textbook at the same speed (pages per minute or hour) as you do with say….Harry Potter?
