Project Overview • Planning for Natural Hazards and Climate Change Adaptation (PLAN 590) – Gavin Smith, Instructor • The Science of Coastal Hazards (ENST 490) - Tom Shay, Instructor • The Coastal Hazards Center, the Department of City and Regional Planning and the Curriculum for the Environment and Ecology propose to create a certificate program focused on the study of disaster management and climate change adaptation.

  3. Planning for Natural Hazards and Climate Change Adaptation (PLAN 590) • Graduate-level introduction to hazards management planning, including climate change-induced hazards. • Specific areas of study include the practice of planning and its application to hazard mitigation and disaster recovery. • Plan quality evaluation (leveraging DHS-funded hazard mitigation and disaster recovery research and PQP tools); PQP applied to the evaluation of climate change plans • Emphasis is also placed on the connectivity between planning for natural hazards and disasters and climate change adaptation, emphasizing the principles of sustainability and disaster resilience. • Guest speakers

Science of Coastal Hazards • Special topics course in the Curriculum for Environment and Ecology • Undergraduates in Environmental Studies and Environmental Science • CoastalOceanography and coastalhazards • Tsunami and hurricane focused • 2013 Environmentalcapstoneproject (ENST/ENVR 698) Hazard mitigation and climate change adaptation

Indicate how the project benefits the Homeland Security Enterprise • Escalating disaster losses, including those tied to climate change • Curriculum emphasizes disaster resilience and adaptation • Growing understanding of the nexus between climate change and disasters • National Academy of Science Reports: Facing Hazards and Disasters: Understanding Human Dimensions (2006) and Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change (2010) • 1) foster collaborative multi-disciplinary research, 2) encourage expanded teaching efforts, 3) and more effectively translate research to practice. • Creating the next generation of hazards researchers and practitioners • Coalesce UNCCH faculty that are studying natural hazards and disasters • Strong market for graduates

Technical Approach and Progress to Date • 2 courses developed and taught in the Fall of 2012 • Identified Sponsoring Departments for Certificate Program • Curriculum for Environment and Ecology • Department of City and Regional Planning • Support provided by CHC-R • 9 hours core courses/ 9 hours electives / Policy and science track • Met with Associate Dean for Academics • Graduate certificate • Draft certificate application 80% complete • Visiting lecturer Harvard University School of Design, Spring 2013

  7. Looking Forward • Convene CEE, DCRP, CHC-R to discuss, modify and finalize certificate program draft • Proposed “Super Course” in Coastal Hazards and Vulnerability (ENST, MASC, GEOL, DCRP, CHC-R) • Develop disaster recovery course in partnership with National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (University of Hawaii and NOAA NCDC) • Submission of Certificate Program to UNCCH Review Committee for approval • Year 6 course development and teaching (Fall 2013) • Begin Certificate Program in Fall of 2013 or Spring 2014
