  1. Lab Safety By: Garrett McWilliams 9-12-11

Rules of a Science Laboratory • In order to keep a safe environment, we must follow certain rules in a science laboratory. • These rules are different than rules for other classrooms. • We will look at rules that discuss proper behavior, procedures correct use of chemicals, equipment, and fire hazards.

  3. Behavior • Never run or play around in the laboratory. EXAMPLE: Michelle was running in the science room and tripped over the class pet cage. She fell into her table and knocked over her group’s experiment, which created a major disaster. • Always use inside voices during group work. EXAMPLE: Garrett was talking entirely too loud and did not hear the teacher’s instructions to turn off the hot plate. His solution burned in the pan he heated and created a bad smell in the school.

  4. Procedures • Never begin lab experiment without teacher’s permission. EXAMPLE: Sherry came into class early and began her experiment without permission. She created an explosion that started a fire. • Always pull long hair up. EXAMPLE:Rico had very long hair, but didn’t pull it back while working in the lab. It got caught in the triple beam balance and ripped out a large quantity of his lovely locks.

  5. Fire • Know where the fire extinguisher is located. EXAMPLE:Fantaysha’s weave caught on fire. She knew where the fire extinguisher was and was able to put out the fire. • Know where fire blanket is located and how to use it. EXAMPLE: Johnny accidentally caused a fire and was severely burned because he did not know how to properly use the fire blanket.

  6. Chemical • Do not mix chemicals without the permission from a teacher. EXAMPLE: Tony’s favorite colors are red and blue, so he tried to make his experiment those colors. Instead, he created toxic fumes and became ill. • Replace lids on all chemicals immediately after use. EXAMPLE: Trenisse forgot to put the lids on the chemicals and spilled one. It got on her clothes and burned right through them.

  7. Equipment • After you are done with an experiment, be sure to put up all equipment. EXAMPLE:Part of Jimmy’s lab grade was to put up all materials properly. He failed the assignment for leaving materials out. • Be careful with the laboratory equipment, it is expensive and fragile. EXAMPLE: Billy was horsing around and broke several test tubes. He cut his hand and had to have stitches.
