  13. Educate community about laws & effects on brain development. Take advantage of milestone moments – pregnancy, child birth, start school, transition activities, distribution of new driver’s licenses, etc. Logic Model 2009 WHY HERE? Adults (parents) want to be supportive/cool and “relate” to youth & so turn a blind eye to the partying and binge drinking which contributes to risky behavior. Community norms favorable to early alcohol and tobacco use. Training for all coaches (rec league & schools), teachers & and staff concerning substance abuse, and Developmental Assets. Offer training to business & community. WHY? Perception that the recreational use and abuse of alcohol and tobacco by adults AND youth is ok. Increase knowledge of substance abuse issues and mental health supports through PSAs, announcements at sports events, fliers included with paychecks/ water bills, billboards, posters, information in bathroom stalls in businesses & schools. Also other written/TV/radio access. WHY HERE? Community is not informed of the facts of addiction and/or have tuned them out as scare tactics. Create a new face for informing the public by involving the youth in efforts to educate & inform as well as in attendance at governing boards. PROBLEM: Substance abuse is a community problem Become more politically active – campaign to change/strengthen laws related to under age drinking and work for the Support 21 Act, encourage implementing consistent and logical consequences for criminal violations regarding alcohol and tobacco. Contact gov’t officials about laws & enforcement of existing laws WHY HERE? Substance abuse is not just a teen problem – Alcohol, tobacco and other drugs are also used by adults, too, to the point of addiction. WHY? Addiction to legal and illegal substances. Increase partnerships with businesses, churches, medical & legal community, social services, and court services in effort to change community norms alcohol and tobacco. Help facilitate substance abuse and mental health treatment options within our community. Encourage Employee Assistance Programs. Implement Student Assistance Program and a confidential referral process. WHY HERE? Alcohol and tobacco use as a response to stress, peer pressure (for adults & teens); pressure to perform in sports, academics, family environment, etc. Implement peer to peer counseling, produce brochures from youth re. “kids aren’t all doing it” and messages to parents. Create a speakers bureau for businesses, schools and civic groups. Produce power point/video that can be distributed for use in businesses, training sessions, mentors, etc
