Suicide Prevention • Suicide is self-induced death, intentionally caused! • Suicide Attempt is an intentional act, causing physical self harm, where death would have occurred had there been no intervention • Suicide gesture is an intentional act, causing or intending to cause physical self-harm in a way normally associated with suicide, but which would not have caused death, even without intervention. • Suicide ideation is a statement or pattern of statements, words, or behaviors which reveal a preoccupation with the idea of self-induced death.

  5. Suicide Risk Factors • Problems with family, relationships, depression, job, Navy and/or finances • Made previous attempts • A family history of suicide • Experienced a recent suicide of friend or relative • Threaten suicide • Possession of a weapon • Specific, well thought out plans

  6. Potential Suicide Warning Signs Verbal statement Death of friend/relative Unusual interest in death Talk about feeling of worthlessness General decline Changes: sleep, diet, mood, personality Preparations Accident Prone

  7. Suicide Myths • Don’t stereotype • People who threaten suicide don’t commit suicide • People who have been unsuccessful are not serious about committing suicide

  8. Individual’s Role in Suicide Prevention • Remember to: WATCH! LISTEN! REPORT!
