Learning, Literature, Language • Greek philosophy – Stoicism • Virgil – emphasized weight & seriousness of Roman character • Ovid – light, witty poetry for enjoyment • Livy – multivolume history of Rome, legends & myth • Tacitus – accurate facts of Roman history • Latin is founding language for Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, English, Romanian

  5. Building & Architecture • Arch, dome, cement • Coliseum • Bridges & aqueducts • Network of roads

  6. Roman Law • Everyone had right to equal treatment under law • Innocent until proven guilty • Burden of proof rests with accuser, not accused • Punished only for actions, not thoughts • Unreasonable or unfair laws should be set aside
