  1. uDu: Plop Plop Fizz Fizz • • Your lab group will make two fizzy mixtures using household substances. Your task is to hypothesize what gas is produced by each mixture, predict the behavior of each gas, and then test that prediction with an experiment.

  2. uDu: Plop Plop Fizz Fizz MATERIALS: Materials are listed here and are available at the front table. SAFETY: Everyone must wear goggles ! Long hair must be tied back and long sleeves must be rolled up !

  3. uDu: Plop Plop Fizz Fizz OBSERVATIONS: Prepare each mixture and observe the behavior of the bubbles. You may also waft the gases being made to detect any odor. Do NOT taste the mixtures. MIXTURE 1: Squirt about 2 cm of water into the test tube and add a quarter tablet of generic Alka Seltzer. Rinse out the test tube when done. MIXTURE 2: Use the pipette to squirt 3 ml of bleach into the test tube. Then add 2 ml of hydrogen peroxide. (One ml fills the column of the pipette.) Rinse out the test tube when done. HYPOTHESIS: Which mixture made oxygen gas, and which made carbon dioxide? You must INFER from your observations !!!

  4. uDu: Plop Plop Fizz Fizz EXPERIMENT: You have everything you need to figure out which gas is which — so do it! Predict what each gas will do and test those predictions with an experiment. Record the results. CONCLUSION: State whether your hypothesis was correct or not and support your conclusion by referring to your results

  5. uDu: Plop Plop Fizz Fizz EXAMPLE: HYPOTHESIS: The Alka Seltzer mixture makes carbon dioxide. PREDICTION: CO2 will put out the match flame. EXPERIMENT: Make the mixture and immediately light the match, and insert the match into the test tube. Observe if the flame goes out or not. CONCLUSION: The match did go out in the gas from the Alka Seltzer mixture, so our hypothesis was correct.
