Understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the varied structural patterns and features of literary nonfiction and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. Students are expected to analyze passages in well-known speeches for the author's use of literary devices and word and phrase choice (e.g., aphorisms, epigraphs) to appeal to the audience. • (14)  Writing Process. Use elements of the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing) to compose text. A) Plan first draft, B) develop drafts, C) Revise drafts , D) Edit drafts, and E) Revise final draft

Receive books and other related materials (study guides, reading assignment) • 2. Relate prior knowledge to the new material • 3. Develop research skills • 4. Write to inform by developing and organizing facts to convey information • 5. Begin Writing Assignment #1 and the Nonfiction assignment Show students pictures of barrio life in a major city such as Los Angeles or Chicago. Then do a group KWL Sheet with the students Pre-reading vocabulary Homework Read 20 mins a day LANGUAGE OBJ Essential Question? Assessment KWL chart and pre-reading vocabulary sheet (How well did the student do?) “How are the pictures similar and different from my neighborhood?”
