  4. Location • Yucatan Peninsula • Present day Mexico and Guatemala • 1500 bc-1200 ad • Tikal was the largest city

  5. GOVERNMENT • Rulers and priests lived in city centers • Priests made the most important decisions because they knew the god’s wishes • Middle class just outside city • Peasants on outskirts

  6. ACHIEVEMENTS • Accurate 365 day calendar • Astronomy (study of stars, moon, sun) • Built giant pyramids • Used Hieroglyphic writing

  7. Culture/Religion • Farmed potatoes, corn, tomatoes & avocadoes • Polytheistic, believed in human sacrifice • Chichen Itza was a main city with a well for sacrificed bodies

  8. The Mayan Demise • Began to decline around 900 AD • By 1100 AD they were almost gone, but… • No one is sure why. • Rebellion? • Environment? • Disease? • Never encountered European explorers

  12. Location • Civilization in central Mexico from 1200-1521 AD • Tenochtitlan city built in center of Lake Texcoco • Location based on symbol from gods

  13. Achievements • Written history using hieroglyphics • Sustained farming using floating gardens

  14. Culture/Religion • Polytheistic, practiced human sacrifice • Captured enemies were not killed but were forced into slavery to supply Aztec leaders. • Ritual practices, including decorative use of gold.

  15. GOVERNMENT • Warrior people • Leader was descendent of the gods • Council of leaders would choose next leader

  16. ENCOUTERS WITH EUROPEANS • Cortes realized wealth of resources and invaded. • Montezuma was captured. • Smallpox and typhus killed many Aztecs • Montezuma died and organized civilization disappeared.
