  2. Shield Volcano • A wide sloping mountain formed by thin layers of lava.

  3. Cinder Cone Volcanoes • A volcano that has a cone like shape and is very steep.

  4. Composite Volcano • Are cone shaped mountains which layers of lava and ash alternate it.

  5. Calderas • A caldera is a huge hole left behind by a volcano that has collapsed.

  6. Volcanic Neck • Magma that hardens in a volcano’s pipe is called a volcanic neck.

  7. Dike • Magma forcing itself across layers of rock hardens into a dike.

  8. Sill • A sill forms when magma squeezes between layers of rock.

  9. Batholith • Large rock masses form the core of many mountain ranges.

  10. Landforms From Lava & Ash • Rock and materials from lava create many landforms including composite volcanoes , cinder cone volcanoes , and lava plateaus. • Thin layers of lava pouring out the vent of a volcano hardens on top of each other creating a wide sloping mountain called a shield volcano.

  11. Landforms From Lava and Ash(continued) • If lava from a volcano is thick and stiff can produce ash, cinders, and bombs. • When these features pile on top of each other they form a steep cone shaped feature called a cinder cone volcano. • Alternatively flowing lava erupts ash, cinders, and bombs forming a composite volcano.

  12. Landforms From Lava and Ash (continued) • Lava not only forms mountains but lava forming a high level area are called lava plateaus.

  13. Landforms From Lava and Ash (continued) • Enormous eruptions may empty the main vent and magma chamber underneath a volcano leaving a hollow shell. With no support the top of the mountain collapses inward leaving a huge hole called a caldera.

  14. Soils From Lava and Ash. • When the hard surface of lava flow breaks down it forms into soil which is very fertile soil. • Volcanic ash breaking down releases potassium, and phosphorus.

  15. Landforms From Magma • Magma forcing through cracks in the upper crust failing to reach the surface hardens into rock. • Water, ice, or wind may strip away the layers of rock above magma and expose it. • Volcanic necks look like giant teeth stuck in the ground.

  16. Landforms From Magma (continued) • A batholith is a mass of rock formed by a large body of magma cooling inside the crust. • Other bodies of magma create dome mountains. Dome mountains form when rising magma gets blocked by horizontal layers of rock.

  17. I Learned • We learned how calderas form and the damage it can leave behind like big giant holes. • We also learned the three different types of volcanoes. • Last we learned lava can form land.
