  1. The Meanings Of Multiplication Teacher- Jeremy Angelos Length- 5 Days Weymouth Public Schools

  2. Teacher Goals/Standards • I will introduce multiplication to the students by teaching them strategies they will need in order to come up with a product of multiplying two numbers. • Common Core State Standards • 3.OA.1- Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g. interpret 5X 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects in each. • 3.OA.3- Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays and measurement quantities. • 3.OA.5- Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide.

  3. LESSON PLAN OUTLINE

  4. Day 1- Multiplication as Repeated Addition • I will introduce this topic by engaging the students in an interactive lesson using Smart Notebook Software- • During this lesson I will introduce vocabulary needed for the skill being taught. • After the lesson, I will show them this video reinforcing the lesson of the day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fP6LRHFYSk&list=UUw8yY4vWcNEnMTp102LEtaw&index=9&feature=plcp • After this video students will complete a task from their textbooks which will allow me to see who has the understanding and who needs further instruction.

  5. Day 2- Arrays and Multiplication • I will introduce this days lesson by showing a video that discusses how to use arrays to model a multiplication problem. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4fN9_ZuqhU&list=UUw8yY4vWcNEnMTp102LEtaw&index=10&feature=plcp • After the video, I will give counters to students, and ask them to create arrays and find the products of given multiplication facts. • Next students will get netbooks and practice their skills by playing a game called space arrays. Before they play they will watch a screencast I made showing the directions. • http://jeremyaic.weebly.com/day-2.html • As the students play I will be going around checking their progress and assisting those who need help.

  6. Day 3- The Commutative Property Of Multiplication • To introduce todays lesson, I will show them a video that I made on a site called go-animate. • http://jeremyaic.weebly.com/day-3.html • I will then discuss the features and the key vocabulary from the video. And give an engaging discussion to launch the lesson. • Students will then create an array for a multiplication fact, and show the commutative property by flipping the array and creating a turnaround fact! • I will assess their understanding while they perform a task in their textbook to make sure they grasp the concept.

  7. Day 4 and 5- Creating Multiplication Word Problems • To begin the lesson I will show them a video from • https://www.pearsonsuccessnet.com/snpapp/login/login.jsp • I will reinforce the vocabulary that is required to make up a multiplication story. For example, a multiplication story must have a number of groups with a number in each group. • To practice I will give the students a multiplication number sentence on the board. On their slate they will create a number story, and then solve it. • Once comfortable I will let students pick their favorite multiplication fact and write a number story/word problem for that fact. I will then check it when they are done for accuracy. • They will save this problem for an activity they will do on day 5.

  8. Day 4 and 5- Creating Multiplication Word Problems • Day 5- • Students will use their multiplication problems to create an illustration for it using a website called- • http://www.toondoo.com • I will teach the students how to use this website, and they will be given time to type their problem and illustrate it. • When they are finished they will print out their toon. • When the students come back from the class, we will present each others and the other students will be able to solve them! • This will conclude my set of lessons that introduces the meaning of multiplication.

  9. Assessment • We will participate in making a bar graph using excel showing our favorite ways of solving multiplication. • I will give a formal assessment on the five lessons to check for student understanding.
