  1. THE PAST -Native American Point of View-

  2. CHANGES… • Before 1500, the original inhabitants of our country (Canada, United States) lived in peace and harmony. They had their own rules, customs, languages…lives • The land consisted of hundreds of different tribes • Europeans first found/discovered North America in the late 1400’s. This was a huge time for Europe…they realized the world was not flat! They found a new land…full of land, animals and wealth! • Many more people from Europe found out about this new land and wanted it for themselves. What they did not know was there were people who lived there…and were not willing to leave.

  3. More Changes… • France and Britain immediately tried to control the entire East-coast. These countries would do anything to have more “power” (land). • Both countries bargained with and tried to ‘buy’ the indigenous people living there. They used European goods, threats, and promises. • How could the Europeans, the people who JUST arrived in Canada, bargain the land with the Native Americans? Didn’t the Native Americans already farm/inhabit that land?

  4. What now? • The Native Americans, not surprisingly, resisted the European bargaining. They did not want anything to do with these “white men”…they wanted to be left alone. • Not a chance.

  5. Hundreds of Natives were killed because of their resistance. This forced many tribes to join with the Europeans. Eventually entire Confederacies were torn apart, forcing tribes and clans to choose sides. • Native Americans officially began the struggle to keep their traditions, culture, language…lives. • As years passed, the Native Americans were forced off their lands, became slaves, were thrust in wars, and were forced to forget their past. • This is still a struggle for many Native American tribes.

  6. Some statistics say that over 80% of the Native American population was lost during the time of European colonization • The European colonization of the Americas forever changed the lives and cultures of the Native Americans. In the 15th to 19th centuries, their populations were ravaged, by the privations of displacement, by disease, and in many cases by warfare with European groups and enslavement by them.
