  1. Course Approach Internationalising Your Curriculum

  2. Teaching, Learning & Assessment Strategy 2011 - 2015 We are a global university with an extensive network of international partners. All of our students should be given the opportunity to become ‘global’ graduates with an understanding of cultures, languages and belief systems other than their own, so they may make a positive contribution to an increasingly multi-cultural, connected and complex world. We are committed to ensuring that all our students study on programmes that draw on international perspectives, that they have opportunities to engage with and learn from a diverse student and staff population, and that they can experience another country at first hand if they wish through a study, work or volunteering experience abroad.

  3. to achieve these ambitions … 1. Our staff will be assisted to develop learning experiences for their students which include international perspectives, and which draw on relevant international professional practice or research. 2. We will strongly encourage students to access language courses, removing barriers to the take-up of languages within and out with the formal curriculum. 3. We will increase opportunities for study, work and volunteering placements abroad and, wherever possible, ensure that all students have equal access to these opportunities. 4. We will value the diversity of our student body and ensure that the academic and social life of the University reflects and benefits from this cultural diversity. 5. Through our wide range of international partnerships we will enhance opportunities for staff and student mobility.

  4. Ireland Poland Columbia Germany Angola Netherlands Kazakstan Italy France Ethiopia Cyprus Thailand Bulgaria Indonesia Romania Nigeria Vietnam Greece India Ghana And more .... China Iraq Where are your students travelling from to study on your Course? What perspectives and differences are they bringing? What are they expecting from Coventry, from the Course and the Course Team?

  5. International Student Life Cycle

  6. International Students at Coventry University Do you know what your students are being told to expect from Coventry University when they arrive? Or what your Course is promising to the external world?

  7. So, what does internationalising the curriculum mean and how is it done? “Internationalisation certainly does mean ensuring that all students understand the international context of their discipline or professional course, that the content of their course incorporates multinational experience and thought, and that ideally they have the opportunity to study a portion of their course in another country. Internationalisation also means that the way in which the course is delivered is culturally inclusive.” Robinson (2000) cited by Butcher, et al (2006) 7

  8. Internationalising the curriculum it’s about making your Course “more outward looking” • How? • Unpick Robinsons (2000) definition and the C-QEM Report • Ask: • Does our curriculum include international matters and issues? • How do we encourage our students to think nationally, internationally and globally across the Course and during learning? • What is available within Coventry University that can support and help us as a Course Team?

  9. What is available already? • A diverse and rich resource to work with – your students • Growth in student numbers – home (to include the EU) and the international market • How your Course uses or takes advantage of what already exists. For example, the topics studied and examples used .... • Are they UK-centric / locally based? • Do they open students eyes to the vistas? • Do they expect students to think in a global way? • Developing “global competence” to prepare learners to become “global citizens”?

  10. Activity – C-QEM Report • How do you currently make use of course diversity ? • What forms of student mobility are used across the course? • What about staff mobility? How does this inform Course Design and • engagement with IEMS, IO and APU? • What about non-mobility engagement – working virtually with others around the world? • What language and cultural developments are designed into the Course? • How are you enabling students to become global citizens with the design of the Course? What capabilities, skills and competence do they need to succeed in the profession and for employability?

  11. Hints, Tips and Ideas In the envelope you will find some hidden treasures! Share these amongst the team members, discuss those that grab your attention and identify ways in which you can internationalise your Course / Curriculum. Use to update your Course Action Plan
