  2. What do you know? 1. What is cancer? Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. 2. What causes cancer? Somehow genes are damaged through exposure to a carcinogen (cancer causing agent) or “damaged” by heredity.(EX. Breast ovarian, prostate, colon, kidney, eye, skin and more) Click on the cells for video links

What are benign and malignant tumors? • Benign: non-cancerous, localizes, slow growing tumors (clumps of cells) • Malignant: cancerous, spreading tumors What does metastasis mean? When a tumor breaks away from the primary site to another part of the body.

  5. What are the warning signs of cancer? 1. Change in bowel or bladder habit 2. A sore that does not heal 3. Unusual bleeding or discharge ( Ear, nose, lungs, rectum, vagina, bladder) 4. Thickening or lump in breast or elsewhere 5. Indigestion or difficulty swallowing 6. Obvious change in wart or mole 7. Nagging cough or hoarseness

What lifestyle changes can I make to help prevent my risk of cancer? • Avoid tobacco –all forms • Avoid weed • Choose foods with less fat, eat more fruits and veggies, whole grains • Exercise • Avoid UV rays from the sun or tanning salons • Wear sunscreen and protective wear • Get check ups and screenings for cancer • When an adult drink moderately • Avoid sex until a committed relationship

Squamous Cell skin cancer: easy metastasis carcinoma 3. A form that appears as c. Basal cell nodules or rough patches carcinoma

  12. Do you know your ABCDEs? A Asymmetry: Normal moles or freckles are completely symmetrical. If you were to draw a line through a normal spot, you would have two symmetrical halves. Border: A mole or spot with blurry and/or jagged edges Color: A mole that is more than one hue is suspicious and needs to be evaluated by a doctor. Normal spots are usually one color. This can include lightening or darkening of the mole. Diameter: If it is larger than a pencil eraser (about 1/4 inch or 6mm), it needs to be examined by a doctor. Breast cancer is not just a girl issue! • About 1 in 8 U.S. women (just under 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. • About 2,350 American men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.   15. Know your family history • A woman’s risk of breast cancer approximately doubles if she has a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. • About 15% of women who get breast cancer have a family member diagnosed with it.

Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer in men between the ages of 15 and 35 What would you notice?
