Classifying the Different Clouds • Infrastructure as a Service • Most flexible • Highest maintenance plan • Can be difficult to configure and scale • Platform as a Service • Very flexible • Little to no maintenance • Easiest to configure and scale • Software/Application as a Service • Least flexible • Least maintenance • Least scalable

  5. A Brief History of SharePoint • SharePoint was first released in 2001 • It has since evolved from a glorified file server to enterprise application platform and data collaboration engine

  6. An Overview of SharePoint Features • Sites: The SharePoint platform fundamentally enables users to provision 'sites' (public or private) without a requirement for specialized knowledge. SharePoint is designed to become the central location for management of sites in an organization.

  7. An Overview of SharePoint Features • Communities: SharePoint aims to support the formation of communities within an organization - these communities may form around teams, projects, clients, geographic locations, etc. SharePoint also provides social features and social integration.

  8. An Overview of SharePoint Features • Content: SharePoint provides a central location to put content such as files, documents, or general information. This can be accessed and modified within a web browser or using a client application (typically Microsoft Office) via desktop, smartphone or smart device. SharePoint 2010 also provides a concurrent edit ability with Office 2010.

  9. An Overview of SharePoint Features • Search: SharePoint provides a range of search abilities, including in documents, in external content (such as network shares or public websites), and in user profiles

  11. An Overview of SharePoint Features • Insights: SharePoint provides data integration, data crawling, and report design to enable business decision making. SharePoint can integrate with SQL Server Reporting Services to surface business intelligence

  12. An Overview of SharePoint Features • Composites: SharePoint provides an application platform based on ASP.NET allowing no-code solutions to complex business problems using SharePoint Designer. SharePoint also allows custom code solutions to be deployed using Visual Studio.

  13. Office 365 Public Facing Site : Don’t Do It • Microsoft does not offer alternate DNS mappings and the root domain is reserved for Lync and Exchange. Public facing URLs require the “www.” prefix. • Microsoft does not offer custom SharePoint config file changes, and the default installation does not recognize mobile browsers. Mobile users get redirected to a login page. • The public facing site cannot access any information on the private site collection. Data is intended to be transferred via Microsoft Access Services and/or the SharePoint Workspace. • Windows Azure Exists and You’ve Seen this Presentation
