  2. Aims and objectives • Background of faecal occult blood test • Different ways of communicating risk about FOB

Basic background of FOB • Faecal occult blood test is a SCREENING programme • It is only for people who are SYMPTOM FREE • It tests for non visible blood in stool • Aims to detect early colon cancer (can be other reasons for blood in stool) • Age 60-69 England (due to extend to 74 in 2014, Wales 60-74, Scotland 50-74, NI 60-71 all very 2 years)

Effective ways of communicating risk • Almost all medical procedures are associated with some risks • Don’t use descriptive words like low and high, instead use actual figures • 5 out 100 people will develop bowel cancer • Use a consistent denominator • 98 out of 100 will have a normal result • 4 out of 100 will have an unclear result • 2 out if 100 will have an abnormal result

  7. Positive Test has been shown to reduce the risk of dying from bowel cancer Negative Not 100% reliable Bowel cancer can be missed Bowel cancer can develop in time in between screening Can end up with more tests further FOB/colonoscopy Offer positive and negative to help weigh up risks
