  2. In determining the effectiveness of Canada’s justice system one needs to examine the role of individuals, the role of organizations and the goals of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).

  3. Organizations’ Roles in Canada’s Justice System • Two organizations that function outside of the government and play a significant role in creating a fair and equitable justice system are the John Howard Society (JHS) and the Elizabeth Fry Society (EFS).

  4. The John Howard Society • The JHS is a justice advocacy group that seeks to provide education about laws and the justice system as they try understand the reasons for crime. • In addition, they offer programs to youth in an effort to prevent crime as well as programs to assist young offenders reintegrate back into society after having committed a crime.

  5. John Howard Society - Programs • One program offered by the JHS is the youth voluntary REE*START with its goal to support and empower youth to make healthy choices in life. • This program offers preventative and reintegrative services such as employment preparation, identification and training, support and advocacy, goal setting and referrals
