  1. Metaphors of the Messiah What’s Behind the Door John 10:1-10 by: Jay Brennan

  2. 7 “I AM” Statements of Jesus • The Bread of Life 6:25 • The Light of the World 8:12 • The Gate 10:7 • The Good Shepherd 10:11 • The Way, The Truth and The Life 14:6 • The True Vine 15:1 • The Resurrection and the Life 11:25

  3. “I AM” – The Gate verse 7: “I AM the gate for the sheep” and verse 9: “I AM the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.”

  4. 1. Use of the Metaphor “Gate” • Psalm 78:23 ; Psalm 118:20: “This is the gate of the LORD through which the righteous may enter.” • Genesis 28:17: “He was afraid and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.’” • Revelation 4:1: “After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven.”

  5. 2. Contrast with Pharisees • Chapter 9 – Pharisees ostracize a new believer…a man Jesus had healed of blindness • Pharisees were charged with “shepherding” the people….they “threw him out.” 9:34 They had “closed the door/gate.” • As a result Jesus in Chapter 10 refers to the Pharisees as “thieves and robbers.” v.9

  6. Three Guarantees • Encounter with the Savior (v.1-6) • Entrance for Safety (v.7-9) • Experience of Satisfaction (9b-10)

  7. 1. Encounter with the Savior • “…and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice.” v. 3-5 • Jesus calls us by name: John 1:43;Luke 19:5; John 11:43

  8. 2. Entrance for Safety v.7-9a • Jesus is both the Shepherd who goes through the gate and He is the gate himself. v.7-9 • Salvation: • A single entrance Acts 4:12 • For everyone – “whoever” • Action is necessary – 2 Cor. 6:2 • Security: John 10:28; Psalm 9:9-10; Psalm 16:1; Psalm 46:1-3,10.

  9. 3. Experience of Satisfaction • Jesus give to us: Abundant life - v. 10 it is experienced now and its not for the super saints, but for the everyday Christian….you and I. • Have life – have it to “full” – means “Beyond what is necessary” or excessively superior. • Satan attempts to be the thief: Steals our first love, kills our joy and destroys our purpose.

  10. Sinner’s Prayer Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that I walk in darkness. And I know that I cannot save myself. I turn away from my religion, from my good works, from anything good I have ever done and from anything good I will ever do. Apart from your mercy and grace, Lord Jesus Christ, I have no hope. I do believe you are the Light of the World, God in the flesh who died on the cross for my sins. Lord Jesus, right now I believe in you and trust you and you alone for my salvation. I ask you to come into my life to be my Lord and Savior. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for taking my sins away. Amen.
