  1. Welcome to INSPIRE at St Joseph’s Primary School!

  2. What is INSPIRE? • involving school parents in reading and writing • Our focus today is on Communication, Language and Literacy.

  3. What is the Curriculum? • The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum is broken down into seven areas of learning. • Prime Areas Personal, Emotional and Social Development Communication and Language Physical Development

  4. Specific Areas Literacy Mathematics Expressive Arts and Design The World

  5. What is CLL? • Language for Communication and Thinking • Linking sounds and letters • Reading • Writing

  6. Saying it the right way! • Keeping the sound pure… • “mmmmmmmmmm” not “mmuuuu” • “ssssssssssssssss” not “ssuuu” • This enables children to blend and write words with increasing accuracy and confidence.

  7. How do we teach CLL at St Joseph’s? • Jolly Phonics • Letters and Sounds • Role play • Drama • Modelling correct use of language

  8. CLL in practice… • Writing in play • Confident to have a go • Use of actions to support phonemes • Confident speaking and listening

  9. Linking sounds and Letters. Phonics Jargon busting! • Phoneme • Digraph • Trigraph • Grapheme • Blending • Segmenting • CVC • ROBOT ARMS!!

  10. Using Jolly phonics • Let’s sound out simple cvc words using the Jolly Phonics actions - We learn by doing!! • Dog d…o…g • Mum M…u…m • Dad D…a…d • Fish F…i…sh • Chip Ch…i…p

  11. How you can help at home • When reading unfamiliar words, encourage children to use their ‘phonic knowledge’. • Never cover illustrations as they support your child in working out the context and meaning of the word. • Always say the first sounds loudly and then get quieter. • Always make reading time special, quiet and enjoyable.

  12. What about the ‘Tricky Words’? • The ‘Tricky Words’ are also known as ‘Irregular’ words and no matter how hard you try you cannot sound them out i.e. the was come to do • The first Tricky Words your child has to learn are: to the no go I “ You can’t sound them out, you’ve just got to know them”

  13. Outline of what’s happening next. • Time for you to go into Reception class to spend time with your children. • You will see a range of differentiated phonics activities that your child accesses on a weekly basis. Have fun!
