  2. What Will This Class Teach You? The basics of intellectual property (IP) law How to recognize IP in your own inventions and other products How to determine the patentability of an invention How to avoid infringement of another’s patent How to use patents to make money How to contribute to your organization’s innovations and patents and grow professionally

Other Things You Will Learn About • Relevant legal jargon • e.g., “claims”, “read on”, “prior art” • The Peer To Patent Program • The Recent Patent Reform • e.g., what a first-to-file system is and what the U.S. moving to it means for inventors like YOU • The ongoing smartphone patent war • Excellent example of how businesses leverage their IP against one another in the real world

Class Projects • For the first time, class projects will utilize social media applications, including • YouTube • Twitter • Projects are expected to be a bit unorganized at first, but will improve in quality (and speed of completion) over time • This year’s class will also include an actual visit to a patent litigation trial to witness firsthand how patent rights are asserted in court

Social Media Assignments – YouTube • We have a class YouTube channel, “patents2012” • Each week, each student will post a 3-4 minute video on a topic of their choosing pertaining to the smartphone patent war • Projects are not intended to demonstrate mastery of the subject matter, but rather that you have made a reasonable effort to inform yourselves about the topic • Students are encouraged to experiment with the format of their submissions • i.e., can be taken with a webcam (interview style), an uploaded PowerPoint presentation, etc. – be creative! • Note: students are NOT required to make their own YouTube accounts/channels • Additionally, each student is expected to comment on at least three classmates’ videos for that week • Goal is to build a community between likeminded peers • Students must send YouTube submissions as email attachments to patentengineering2012@gmail.com by 5 pm every Friday

Social Media Assignments – Twitter • Step one: create a Twitter account if you don’t already have on • Step two: follow “patents2012” on Twitter • Step three: follow at least three sources of IP-related news • This is required • Step four: each week, tweet 2-3 times about a topic related to the smartphone patent war with the hashtag @patents2012 • Tweets should include links, which should be shortened using bitly

  7. Grading • Students will be graded on • YouTube videos – 40% • YouTube comments – 10% • Twitter messages – 15% • Class participation – 15% • TBD – 20% • Participation is required in all classes • You can miss one class for a justified reason – please let me know in advance • Emphasis is on learning and exploration of new and interesting topics • You will be fine 

  8. Smartphone Patent War – Next Week: APPLE • Assignments: • Find relevant news on Apple’s current status/disputes in the patent war • Create a 3-4 minute video (can be with webcam, PowerPoint converted to .mov file, be creative!) • Email to patentengineering2012@gmail.com by 5 pm this Friday • Follow patents2012 on Twitter • Submit 2-3 tweets about Apple’s re: the patent war with the hashtag @patents2012 by 5 pm Friday
