Practice Structure • Inverted pyramid (core @ top) – coaches practice game style teaching (Games Approach) • Game and Situational Practice Structure • Set up practice like game (4 quarters + OT) *example - Pre / 1st-2ndqtr / halftime / 3rd-4thqtr / OT • Reflect (feedback) and Assess (Quizzes) • short term goals = daily improvement • long term goals = weekly improvement Stay the Course *you will be good @ what you work @

Offensive Thinking • Self-scout – prep ALL in teaching - Balance • Competeagainst yourself – Everyday • Triangle thinking and calling = 3 plays in 1 • Keep Simple and Reverse Defensive Logic • Situational planning – prepare mini game plans = ALL on the same page • Contingency planning – prepare for Worst to Best and everything In-between

Contingency Planning • Critical (1 yard line – in and out of end zone) • Blitz Package(3 answers for blitz always) • Black and Red Zones • Get to and 4 Down Zones • Free Zone • 3rd Downs (short / medium / long / Xlong) • 1st and 10 / 2nd and 10 / 2nd and short • Mule Offense (4 minutes left with lead) • Quad Offense (only time for 4 plays & behind) • 2 minute • 2 point • Specials (last play of game / half / take a knee)

  7. Step 1 - Daily Fundamentals • TECHNICAL DRILLS • Use to develop proper skill technique with speed – balance – power (efficient + effective) “Good start = chance for a good finish” NOTES:*DO EVERYDAY with emphasis for the day (pick 1 core concept)

Step 2 – Group Work • Tactical Drills – Group work = middle “Part” • Use to improve decision making process (develop quality) • Once drill is installed – work to increase quality reps *Good to use Sonic Calls for names of drills *will assist and reinforce memorization of calls • Must work against a live person – forces athlete to make game like decisions @ game like speed • Coach positions themselves to see EYES *SEE what they see • Must finish strong – ATTENTION to DETAIL Lets look @ Jet Stretch for each Position

Step 3 – Team (good vs good) • #1 Team - Perfect Plays • Use to introduce and Review previous install • Start of “Whole” in Concept Teaching • Everyone must SEE Big picture • #2 Team – 5 min blocks - End of “Whole” • Situational (Field zone / Down & Distance) • Defensive Front(s) / Cover(s) / Blitz (%) • Three Plays (over and over – fast)

  13. 3 R’s • 3 R’s – NOT WHAT YOU DO, HOW YOU DO IT *Martens, “Successful Coaching”, 3rd Edition, Human Kinetics, 2004 • Traditional Approach –playing the game only after practicing the basic technical and tactical skills. • Games Approach –it teaches athletes AND staff, how to play the game commonly seen in sandlot play. Goal is to create game like situations with everything you do – develop quality game reps.

  14. #1 R – HOW you RUN it • #1R - HOW you RUN it • COMMUNICATION – KEY TO TEACHING – “saying nothing means something” • Do not underestimate your staff &players ability to learn • Focus on how they best receive and learn information • Adjust your way of presenting-teaching to meet needs • Create practice opportunities both mentally and physically to maximize their learning • Example:use Sonic Tempo (1 word calls) for drill names-reads-reps – “Rocket-Laser” Drill

  15. #2 R – HOW you REP it • #2R – HOW you REP it • REP FORMULA • 24 positive rehearsals needed for quality execution • 4 verts formula: 5 recs X 25 reps each x 50% completion percentage per attempt = 250 reps of 4 verts pass play for Qb to fully begin to execute play • Think about it – you as the coach + players need tons of opportunities to make tough decisions – create as many as possible every time you are together • Examples: design drills to be game like • “Rocket-Laser Option Game” – Core Tactical Drill

  16. #3 R – HOW you REACT • #3R – HOW you REACT • TECHNICAL versus TACTICAL TEACHING –difference is providing decision making with everything you do. • Learning is a relatively permanent improvement in performance as a result of practice.

Technical Skills • Technical Skills (defined) – the specific procedures to move one’s body to perform the task that needs to be accomplished • Technical skills Today:Experts used to think that athletes learned technical skills by developing mental blueprints through repeated practice of the tasks. • Because high complex techniques of sport actually consist of many different responses of a similar type – the concept of learning through mental blueprints has been debunked. • Today, scientist believe that athletes learn complex skills by abstracting key pieces of information from each performance to create rules about how to perform in the future. • The athletes are then developing motor programs (a complex set of rules, that, when called into action, permits the athlete to produce a movement). • So, one of our responsibilities, then, as a coach is to help the athletes develop good motor programs – our technical skills (specific techniques involved the sport).

Tactical Skills • Tactical Skills (defined) – problem solving skills that are based on three elements (tactical triangle) • Tactical Triangle:From a tactical perspective, think of a sport contest as a series of problems to be solved by you (the coach – HC + assistants) and the players – these 3 elements are involved: • Reading the play or situation • Acquiring the knowledge needed to make an appropriate tactical decision • Applying one’s decision-making skills to the problem • So, the key is to first identify the most important tactical decisions-skills needed to be successful. Next, make sure to create both for the coaches and the players as many practice opportunities (reps) involving these core tactical skills to accelerate their development – decision skills. • Example: 5 min blocks-periods / game situation always / up tempo / sub individual vs stop team • Example: use “freeze-replay” and ask question rather than give answer + player reflection
