Process: Before the Interview • Find your topic first • Figure out what you want to interview your person about • Personality trait? • Challenge overcome? • A specific experience? • Something you admire about them? • Develop 15-20 interview questions mostly focused around your topic • OR • Talk first, figure out topic as you go • Generate several broad questions for your person • As the conversation evolves, figure out what you find interesting, and ask more detailed questions about that topic.

  4. Part 1: interview, cont’d • Process: the Actual Interview • Explain why you’re interviewing the person • Ask a few “warm-up” questions • Have a conversation about your topic • Ask follow-up questions • Be okay with straying from your prepared list

  5. Part 2: the profile • Have your interview transcript notes in front of you • Think about organization: how do you want to tell your person’s story? • The profile is a narrative about the person, possibly interspersed with your experiences knowing the person • In your personal narrative (first semester), you told your own story. Now you are telling someone else’s story. Similar structures, using descriptive language, etc.
